Díaz-Canel rallies Cubans

President Miguel Díaz-Canel marked the 61st anniversary of the Cuban Revolution on 1 January by claiming that the Communist state would endure in the face of external aggression because Cubans were “conquerors of the impossible”. Surviving 2020 will be challenging enough let alone conquering. Cubans face one of the toughest years since the onset of the Special Period in 1991. US President Donald Trump is likely to try and turn the screw even more, tightening sanctions on Cuba, in the run-up to his re-election bid in November 2020. With Venezuela’s state oil company Pdvsa feeling the force of tough US sanctions, further fuel shortages in Cuba are likely, damaging an ailing economy.
