Pompeo speaks to Uruguay’s president-elect

Guatemala: On 8 January Guatemala’s outgoing President Jimmy Morales flatly denied reports that Mexican nationals will now be included amongst asylum seekers being sent to Guatemala by the US as part of a new asylum cooperation agreement (ACA) signed in July 2019 by Guatemala and the US. In response to a journalist at a public event, Morales declared that “if the US presents a document signed by any of my staff or I, which permits the arrival of Mexicans, then I will accept it. But on the contrary it’s just a rumour”. Morales’ words are at odds with information provided to Reuters on 6 January stating that the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has been informed that Mexican nationals will also be considered “amenable” to the ACA. A statement by the Mexican government on 6 January expressed disagreement with such a move, which it says could affect approximately 900 Mexican nationals currently seeking asylum. Morales conceded that the US had raised the possibility of sending Mexican nationals to Guatemala but said that as yet nothing has been agreed and that it will be a topic for the next government. President-elect Alejandro Giammattei is due to assume office on 14 January.
