In brief: Venezuela’s parliament suggests inflation is finally slowing

* The finance commission of Venezuela's parliament has reported an annual inflation figure for 2019 of 7,374.4% – still extremely high, but substantially less than the 1,700,000% recorded in 2018. The commission added that inflation decreased throughout the year, with the monthly rate of 33.1% for December 2019 the lowest since the country entered hyperinflation. However, the accuracy of these figures remains uncertain, as Venezuela’s central bank stopped reporting its own inflation statistics in January 2017, and there is an absence of reliable data on consumer prices in the country.
