Cracking down on corruption. On 10 January, El Salvador’s attorney general Raúl Melara ordered the arrest of former president of the legislative assembly Sigfrido Reyes (2011-2015) for leading a corruption network, laundering some US$6m in proceeds from fraud and embezzlement, and issued an arrest warrant. Melara announced the investigation on 9 December. Reyes becomes the first former president of the legislative assembly to face legal proceedings.
