* Brazil has become the fourth destination for foreign direct investment (FDI) worldwide, according to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (Unctad) Investment Trends Monitor. FDI inflows to Brazil totalled US$75bn in 2019, up from US$60bn in 2018, a 26% increase driven by the government’s privatisation programme. Unctad found that global FDI totalled US$1.39trn in 2019, down slightly from 2018, although flows to Latin America and the Caribbean increased by 16%. Global FDI flows are expected to increase slightly in 2020, and Unctad notes that in Brazil specifically, divestments of subsidiaries of state companies are expected to gain pace and attract further FDI.
