A 'real combat' exercise staged by the Peruvian army to show off the instant result of the government's new defence programme turned into an embarrassment when careless reporting portrayed one of the exhibits as the prototype of a 'Scud-type' missile being developed in Peru. This provoked a wave of feverish speculation online. Under media pressure Chile's defence minister said that he would be asking for explanations, and his Peruvian counterpart ended up issuing a denial which in turn prompted new questions.
