VENEZUELA: Guaidó seeks to rally foreign support

Juan Guaidó is intent on capitalising on the publicity afforded by the clumsy attempt to prevent him from assuming the presidency of the national assembly for a second straight year by going on a high-profile foreign tour in defiance of a legal bar on his leaving Venezuela. His objective is to deepen international support for the restoration of democracy in the country and turn the screws on the de facto president Nicolás Maduro. Guaidó has his work cut out. Translating widespread goodwill into action is problematic, not least as foreign powers bore witness to how his efforts to outflank Maduro were thwarted time and time again last year after initially catching him off guard.
