In brief: Peru releases poverty map

* Peru’s national statistics institute (Inei) has produced a ‘monetary poverty map’ in collaboration with the World Bank, showing that 13.4% of the population live in ‘extreme poverty’, defined as having a household income of less than PEN300 (US$88) a month. The map also highlights significant regional inequality, with 16 of the poorest 20 districts in the country located in Cajamarca region, despite this being the centre of Peru’s gold mining industry.
