* Colombia’s national statistics institute (Dane) has reported that unemployment rose to 13% in January, compared to 12.8% in the same month last year. Dane emphasised that urban unemployment fell from 13.7% to 12.9% in this period, but this was outweighed by soaring rural unemployment.
Jorge Bedoya, president of agricultural producers’ association Sociedad de Agricultores de Colombia (SAC), attributed this to the effects of climate change on agricultural output, in particular the severe frosts that hit the sector in January and February.
