* This year’s Carnival has been the best one ever for the city of Rio de Janeiro, according to Rio’s tourism office (Riotur). Riotur reports that the city received 2.1m tourists, saw 10m people take to the streets for celebrations which lasted a record number of days, recorded 93% hotel occupancy rates on average (with some areas reaching 100%) and the highest number of international ships docked in the city in the last 20 years, to the tune of R$4bn (US$894m) in economic activity.
