PERU: MRTA portrayed as a revived security threat

President Alan Garcí­a has been presenting the Movimiento Revolucionario Tupac Amaru (MRTA) as a revived security threat, linked to Hugo Chávez 's continental 'Bolivarian' scheme. The MRTA has been considered virtually defunct since 1996, with most of its leaders either dead or in prison. Garcí­a recently tried, unsuccessfully, to persuade the European Parliament to classify the MRTA as an international terrorist organisation, a label the US dropped eight years ago.
