Wave of land invasions. The Mesa Nacional de Coordinadoras Agrícolas (MCNOC), the peasant organisation belonging to the alliance that carried Fernando Lugo to the presidency, launched in early May a wave of land invasions, demanding the distribution of this land among 11,000 landless peasants. By 22 May the organisation's secretary-general, Luis Aguayo, was reporting that 20 of the 24 planned invasions had taken place (though in fact some groups of squatters had been peacefully evicted by the police). Most of the invasions took place in the central department of San Pedro (President-elect Lugo's old stomping ground) and the southern one of Itapuá, but others have been reported in Canindeyú, Caazapá and Concepción, where a second wave has been announced by Aguayo.
