GUATEMALA: Giammattei’s initial moves

Since taking office on 14 January for a four-year term, Guatemala’s new President Alejandro Giammattei has sought to dispel concerns about the direction of anti-corruption efforts. Such fears have intensified with the departure of the United Nations (UN)-backed International Commission against in Impunity in Guatemala (Cicig) last year [SSR-19-11]. More generally Giammattei’s initial moves with regard to security are in line with his hard-line electoral pledges and have failed to surprise.
