On 20 February, just 20 days after ceasing operations in Colombia, Uber, the peer-to-peer ridesharing platform returned to the country. The shutdown of the app had come into force on 1 February, after a 20 December 2019 ruling by the superintendence of industry & commerce (SIC) which declared that Uber had violated fair competition rules and suspended its operations in the country. The company had tried appealing to the Colombian government to overturn the ruling, on the basis that it was a positive force for the Colombian economy. According to Uber, it had paid approximately US$20m in taxes in Colombia since it entered the market in 2013 and employed 88,000 drivers to serve around 2m customers in 19 Colombian cities.End of preview - This article contains approximately 1082 words.
