The expansion of Pentecostalism: an economic matter?

“Stop suffering!” Brazilians of all religious denominations are familiar with part of this sermon, the slogan of the most powerful and well-known evangelical pastor in the country, Edir Macedo, who is also the owner of a national TV station. His continuously expanding mega-church, the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God, promises blue skies and an easy way out of trouble, especially to financially vulnerable people who have lost their jobs and are in debt and despair.
