BRAZIL: Prisons in times of a pandemic

The coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic has raised the question of how the containment of the outbreak should be managed in prisons, ideal incubators for the disease. This has brought into sharp focus the shortcomings of penitentiary systems and prison infrastructure worldwide. Brazil, where these shortcomings were already frequently exposed in riots, prison breaks and even massacres [SSR-19-07], was the first Latin American country to see prison unrest due to the coronavirus.
