In brief: Guatemala approves extra funds to fight Covid-19

* Guatemala’s congress has approved various increases to the national budget, intended to address the effects of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic in the country. The most recent increase was on 5 April, with a decree (20-2020) authorising an additional Q5.14bn (US$668m), of which Q426m will go to the health ministry, Q370m on the acquisition of medical equipment, and Q30m on hospital infrastructure. This follows the approval on 3 April of a Q11.1bn economic reactivation plan, of which Q6bn will go on a Q1,000 pay-out to 2m families to pay for food and basic services, Q2bn on support for those who have lost their jobs, and Q3bn on loans for micro, small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs).
