CUBA: Calls mount for US to suspend embargo

The High Representative of the European Union (EU) for foreign affairs and security policy, Josep Borrell, has joined the United Nations (UN) Secretary General António Guterres in calling for an immediate global ceasefire and to ensure that sanctions do not “impede the delivery of essential equipment and supplies” to confront the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. This follows a direct call on 26 March by Cuba and seven other countries affected by sanctions. While Latin America and the Caribbean (in common with the rest of the world) is struggling with the economic fallout of the pandemic, Cuba is being hit particularly hard: its economic prospects were already less than favourable, the UN Economic Commission for Latin America & the Caribbean (Eclac) recently contended, due to the tightening of US sanctions last year.
