Sylvia Cáceres, has reported that the government has revised its projections for economic growth in 2020, and is now expecting a 2% contraction of the country’s GDP. At the start of the year the government had predicted a 4% expansion; this was reduced to 2% growth at the end of March, but Cáceres has said that the impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic is now expected to be even more substantial, and will be “
the clearest impact of our health crisis”. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has suggested that the effect on Peru’s economy may be larger still, forecasting a 5% contraction in 2020.
