In brief: Argentina misses repayment, enters grace period

* Argentina’s government has confirmed that it did not meet the US$500m interest payment due on 22 April on three bonds emitted under international law; and said that it intends to use the 30-day grace period to try to reach a “sustainable” repayment schedule with bondholders. This missed repayment comes after Argentina refused to soften its debt restructuring offer that was rejected by bondholders. In a statement, the economy ministry reaffirmed its intention to honour the country's debts, however, the spread on Argentine sovereign bonds in JP Morgan’s Emerging Markets Bond Index (Embi) rose 240 basis points to 3,857, indicating an increased risk of a default.
