Rising death toll of environmental defenders
Few countries are more deadly for environmental human rights defenders (EHRDs) than Mexico. At least 15 such individuals were murdered there in 2019, nudging the total death toll since 2012 up to 83, according to the annual report published on 18 March by environmental NGO Centro Mexicano de Derecho Ambiental (Cemda). The report points a finger at the government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, not only for its impotent response to this systematic violence, in spite of repeated warnings by national and international organisations but also for harbouring a culture of stigmatisation, structural violence, and impunity.
