COLOMBIA: End of ceasefire dashes peace prospects

The Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN) guerrilla group’s unilateral ceasefire throughout the month of April had been a rare cause for optimism in Colombia’s peace process, with the ELN itself suggesting that a temporary truce in the face of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic could represent a significant step towards building an enduring peace. And yet, with the Colombian government and armed forces showing little interest in any reciprocal action, the termination of this ceasefire has made an armistice seem more distant than ever.
