COSTA RICA: Alvarado marks midway point

President Carlos Alvarado delivered his annual state-of-the-nation address on 4 May, marking two years since his centre-left Partido Acción Ciudadana (PAC) government took office. Dominated by the impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, Alvarado’s address highlighted his administration’s virus-response strategy which, as well as boosting his approval ratings, has enabled the government to become one of the first in Central America to begin easing containment measures. However, with Costa Rica’s GDP forecast to suffer one of the biggest contractions this year in the region, Alvarado was forced to acknowledge the huge challenges ahead.
