In brief: Brazil sees spike in unemployment benefits requests in April

* The labour secretariat in Brazil’s economy ministry has announced that it received 748,484 requests for unemployment benefits in April, a 22.1% increase on the number of unemployment benefits applications received in April 2019 and a 39.4% increase on applications logged in March 2020. The number of total applications received over the first four months of this year is 1.3% higher than in the first four months of 2019. The economy ministry notes, however, that there could be a backlog of as many as 250,000 applications, as workers without internet access have been waiting to file their application in person at the national employment system (Sine) offices, which were closed until the end of April due to coronavirus (Covid-19). The majority (87%) of applications were made online in April this year, compared with just 1.7% in April 2019.
