In brief: Warning of pandemic impact on Central American businesses

* A new survey by the Central American federation of chambers of commerce (Fecamco) has warned that the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic is having an “unsustainable impact” on Central American firms. The survey by Fecamco, which polled 1,079 companies across the region, of which 91% were small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), said 40% were not operating, and 47% were operating ‘partially’, of which 57% were operating below 40% of capacity. The  survey also showed that 92% of firms polled had registered a drop in sales, while on average companies had cut 42% of personnel and suspended 52% of their workers, figures which are likely to increase.
