In brief: Brazil’s São Paulo state considering ‘intelligent quarantine’

* The governor of São Paulo state, João Doria, has said that quarantine measures will be maintained from 1 June in a “heterogeneous” manner across Brazil’s wealthiest and most populous state. State-wide isolation measures to contain the spread of coronavirus (Covid-19) were first implemented on 24 March, and have since been extended on three occasions, with the latest extension planned to end on 31 May. Despite the closure of non-essential businesses, and the bringing forward of public holidays in a bid to keep people at home, adherence to isolation measures has been well under the ideal 70% threshold, and the outbreak has advanced beyond São Paulo city, spreading through the state’s rural and coastal areas. Doria has said that he is not currently considering an enforced lockdown, and that an “intelligent quarantine” will be implemented from 1 June based on the situation at local level, monitored daily. São Paulo state is the epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak in Brazil, with 83,625 cases and 6,220 deaths according to the latest official report, which put national figures at 374,898 cases and 23,473 deaths.
