BOLIVIA: Ventilator scandal dominates political agenda

In a public address on 24 May, Bolivia’s interim president Jeanine Áñez told the country: “I recognise that there are things that have not gone the best way in the enormous task of confronting the virus. I recognise this, and I am truly sorry.” In a country fraught with social and political tensions, every whiff of a scandal regarding the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic has been quickly escalated into aggressive partisan confrontation [WR-20-16]. The gravity of Áñez’s response to the latest such issue - allegations of fraud in the procurement of medical equipment - implies a recognition by the interim government of the growing erosion of its credibility in the face of this pandemic.
