ECUADOR: Austerity agenda drives renewed protests

On 24 May, the third anniversary of his inauguration, Ecuador’s President Lenín Moreno outlined the agenda for his final year in office. At present, however, it is by no means certain that he will even see out the next 12 months. According to local pollster Cedatos/Gallup, Moreno’s approval rating is currently at 19%, well below the 66% recorded three years earlier. Interior Minister María Paula Romo attributed this deteriorating popularity to the “natural wear and tear” of governance, but the resurgence of public protests – triggered by the latest round of austerity measures, announced last week [WR-20-20] – suggests that the threat to Moreno’s authority is more immediate, and more significant, than Romo was willing to let on.
