PERU: Slowly changing tack on coronavirus
Peru’s President Martín Vizcarra, known for his early and rigorous application of lockdown measures to fight the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, has announced faster-than-expected measures to re-open the economy. He made the announcement in a televised speech broadcast on 22 May. However, Vizcarra confirmed the fifth extension of the national state of emergency and lockdown, which will now remain in force until at least the end of June, by which point it will have been in place for in excess of three and a half months.
