BRAZIL: Pandemic and politics vying for attention

For several weeks now, the coronavirus (Covid-19) public health emergency in Brazil has been deepening in parallel with an unfolding political crisis. Both have worsened over the course of the last week, with the latter often overshadowing the former. On 22 May, the director of the World Health Organization (WHO) Health Emergencies Programme, Michael Ryan, described South America as “a new epicentre” of the coronavirus pandemic, with Brazil “clearly the most affected”. That same day, Brazil overtook Russia to become the country with the second highest number of cases globally (it has the sixth highest number of deaths), but the country was riveted by the just-released video of a controversial cabinet meeting.
