COLOMBIA: Army spying scandal sparks outrage

In an interview with television channel Caracol regarding the latest espionage scandal linked to the Colombian military, army commander General Eduardo Zapateiro insisted that “individual actions cannot define this institution, beloved and valued by the Colombian people”. It is not yet clear whether the actions in question were indeed “individual”, or rather the product of systemic malpractice; it is more apparent, however, that the military’s reputation in Colombia is at a low ebb and falling fast.
