Latin American populism

Corruption remains a widespread problem throughout Latin America. In the last few years, no less than 11 presidents and former presidents in the region have been forced from office, jailed, or are under investigation for corruption. Analysis of the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), a survey-based measurement developed by Transparency International (TI), confirms that the region’s perceived level of corruption is relatively high when compared to other parts of the world. The index expressed on a range from zero (representing maximum corruption) to 100 (representing maximum integrity in government). Average results in 2012-2018 show that Latin American countries are among the most burdened by corruption in the world and have made no perceived progress in recent years.
