In brief: Large-scale layoffs continue in Ecuador

* Ecuador’s labour minister, Luis Arturo Poveda, has reported that the number of workers made redundant in response to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic in Ecuador has now reached 180,852. During a virtual meeting of the parliamentary commission on workers' rights, Poveda noted that the majority of these redundancies (100,797) were agreed under the formal procedure established by the government to mediate talks between workers and employers. Ecuador’s government has faced widespread criticism and public protests in response to its proposed fiscal austerity measures, which include job losses and pay cuts. Later in the meeting, when discussing layoffs in the public sector, opposition legislator Marcela Holguín criticised the government’s actions, noting that “there are no guarantees of work stability”, and questioning how workers are going to be paid if the state lacks the funds to do so.
