In brief: Brazil’s industrial performance less negative in May

* Brazil’s Confederação Nacional das Indústrias (CNI), a private sector lobby, has released the results from its latest industry survey, according to which industrial performance has begun to improve in May when compared with April, despite still remaining negative. “The indicators that measure industrial performance began to distance themselves from the worst moments of the crisis caused by the new coronavirus, although industrial activity is still falling,” the CNI notes. Official data showed that industrial production saw its biggest monthly fall on record in April. According to the CNI’s survey of 1,859 companies, businesses in the industrial sector continue to expect demand, exports, stock purchase and number of employees to fall over the next six months – however, the pessimism observed in March and April was less pronounced and more diffuse in May.
