How has Covid-19 impacted crime?

One of the reasons given by President Jair Bolsonaro to justify his opposition to isolation measures taken by local authorities in Brazil to limit the spread of coronavirus (Covid-19) is that these would lead to an increase in crime. Year-on-year figures for the first months of 2020 show Brazil’s homicide rate, which decreased in 2018 and 2019, was on the rise again even before the disruption brought about by Covid-19 from March onwards, while other forms of crime appear to have fallen during the pandemic.
