In brief: Nicaraguan gov’t reduces electricity tariffs

* The Nicaraguan government led by President Daniel Ortega has announced a 3% reduction in electricity tariffs for consumers, effective as of 1 July. The change is well short of the 17% reduction demanded by private sector lobbies such as the Consejo Superior de la Empresa Privada (Cosep) and the US-Nicaraguan Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) as part of efforts to mitigate the economic impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
