*A report by the World Bank has suggested that regularising the immigration status of the approximately 400,000 Venezuelans living in Ecuador could contribute between 1.6% and 1.9% of GDP to the country’s economy. The report, ‘Challenges and Opportunities of Venezuelan Migration in Ecuador’, produced in collaboration with the United Nations, found that only 15% of working age Venezuelans in Ecuador have regular immigration status, and as such the majority are limited to working in the informal sector and on temporary contracts. The Ecuadorean government previously offered an ‘immigration amnesty’ under which Venezuelans could apply for permanent residence, but many were excluded through a lack of documentation. The World Bank report noted that Venezuelans currently face significant discrimination in Ecuador, and on average are paid 42% less than Ecuadoreans for the same work.
