* Uruguay’s national statistics institute (INE) has released employment figures for April, which show that the unemployment rate stood at 9.7%, a 0.4 percentage point decrease from the 10.1% unemployment rate recorded in March, and a 0.8 percentage-point reduction from the 13-year high of 10.5% unemployment recorded in February. However, the workforce (which includes employed and unemployed people) as a proportion of the working-age population has decreased, from 59% in March to 57.7% in April. The INE has included new criteria in its monthly report to better reflect the labour market at the time of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic; the percentage of the employed population working remotely rose from 5.3%
“usually” to 19.3% in the last week of April. At the same time, 23.7% of the employed population was
“absent” in April (for reasons including holiday, sick leave, furlough), compared with 14.3% in March.
