VENEZUELA: Call for elections stirs further controversy

Seemingly unperturbed by the raft of international criticism that greeted its appointment [WR-20-24], Venezuela’s controversial new electoral council (CNE) has persevered with preparations for the country’s legislative elections. On 30 June, CNE president Indira Alfonzo confirmed that this vote would take place on 6 December, and responded to concerns about the council’s capacity to administer a free and fair vote by insisting that all 87 registered political organisations (28 national parties, 52 regional parties, and seven indigenous organisations) would be eligible to stand candidates.
