NICARAGUA: Opposition unites ahead of elections

The statutes of the new opposition ‘National Coalition’ (Coalición Nacional) have been ratified by its members – four months after its launch. This is the next step in the coalition’s bid to challenge the ruling Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) led by President Daniel Ortega ahead of the 2021 elections. The evident difficulty for some members in signing up, however, exposes divisions which have long proved a stumbling block in attempts by the opposition to unite against Ortega.
