In brief: Paraguay’s border cities protest economic recovery plan

* Private sector unions in four key commercial cities, located on Paraguay’s borders with Brazil and Argentina, have arranged for a protest to take place today (13 July) against measures in the national economic recovery plan presented on 29 June. In a statement circulated in the local press, the organisers invited workers and residents in the cities of Pedro Juan Caballero (Amambay department), Saltos del Guairá (Canindeyú department), Ciudad del Este (Alto Paraná department), and Encarnación (Itapúa department), to demonstrate their “discomfort with the way in which border cities are treated, and the delay in reactivating trade in general”. According to the unions, the government measures that seek to kickstart the border economy - including a reduction in excise duty and customs, and value-added tax (VAT) - will not in fact have a positive economic effect.
