In brief: Unemployment in Bolivia continues to climb

*A report by the Bolivian private sector lobby Cámara Nacional de Industrias (CNI) has revealed that urban employment in Bolivia rose to 8.1% in May, which it attributed to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. At the end of 2019, the CNI was reporting urban unemployment of just 4.8%, but this has risen steadily in recent months, with an estimated 122,000 urban workers losing their jobs so far this year. The report also included a survey which warned that 73% of businesses in the industrial sector expected to lay off more workers in the coming months. Discontent at the country’s growing unemployment rate was one of several grievances driving widespread street protests in Bolivia on 14 July.
