In brief: Argentina to export beef to Malaysia after 10-year hiatus

* Argentina’s agriculture ministry has announced that it will once again export chilled and frozen beef and bovine offal to Malaysia. The trade was shut down in 2010 following modifications to the Malaysian law on halal certification, a quality guarantee process that applies to foods and products in countries practicing Islam. During a visit to Argentina’s national food safety and quality service (Senasa) in 2019, a delegation from Malaysia’s Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) verified the slaughter and production process and agreed on sanitary protocols to reopen the market. Pre-negotiation planning between the two parties led to the authorisation of one supplier, vetted during the visit, and the consideration of 13 others, which Argentina hopes will also soon be evaluated by the Malaysian officials.
