VENEZUELA: Border chaos causes problems for Maduro

One of the most surprising side effects of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic has been the reversal of one of the most significant migration flows in the world in recent years, as large numbers of Venezuelans who have lost their livelihoods in neighbouring countries now seek to return home. According to Colombia’s migration directorate, over 90,000 Venezuelans have crossed back over the shared border since March, and with diplomatic relations between the two countries severed in 2019 this return has been a chaotic process. Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro has further escalated bilateral tensions by accusing Colombian officials of conspiring to spread Covid-19 into Venezuela.
