According to the report, 82% of tourism-related businesses were closed as of May, of which 5% had shut permanently. The report shows that average sales in the tourism industry are down by 82%, with museums and tourist guides seeing a 100% decline in sales. Restaurants have seen a 72% fall and airlines a 75% decrease, while 27% of tourism industry workers have lost their jobs during the pandemic. According to the latest figures from the United Kingdom-based World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), tourism accounted for 6.2% of Guatemala’s GDP and 6.5% of total employment in 2019.
