MEXICO: Decreasing household income leads to increase in poverty

Mexico’s national council for the evaluation of social development policies (Coneval) on 27 July released its latest quarterly report on income poverty trends. The government agency highlights that prior to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, income poverty – when a household’s per capita income is lower than the cost of a basket of basic foodstuffs that varies in rural and urban settings- had been on a downward trend since 2014. In the first quarter of 2020, the population in income poverty had fallen to 35.7%, close to the 32.9% recorded in the second quarter of 2008, prior to the 2008-2009 global financial crisis. However, in the latest Coneval report, this rose from 53.1% in April to 54.9% in May as a result of job losses and the collapse of economic activity caused by the pandemic.
