In brief: Slow recovery in Brazil’s services sector

* Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the June figures for the volume of services, which show a positive result after four months of negative performance. The services sector grew 5% in June compared with May, after accumulating losses of 19.5% over the previous four months. The recovery remains slow, however, with the volume of services remaining 14.5% below the level recorded in February, the month before containment measures were implemented to contain the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Year-on-year, the volume of the services fell 12.1% in June, decreasing 8.3% in the first six months of 2020, and accumulating a negative result of -3.3% in the 12 months to June 2020.
