The national survey of living conditions (Encovi) published in July by the Universidad Católica Andrés Bello in Caracas featured the claim that Venezuela has overtaken Haiti as the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. According to the survey, based on research conducted between November 2019 and March 2020, 75.8% of Venezuelan households live in poverty (that is, on less than US$3.20 per day), while 54.6% live in extreme poverty (less than US$1.90 per day).
