GUATEMALA: Judges’ election sparks high level tensions
“An institutional crisis instigated by those who seek impunity for corruption”. This was the response by Acción Ciudadana (AC), the national branch of international NGO Transparency International, to tensions which have erupted following an order by the constitutional court (CC) for the process of electing supreme court (CSJ) judges and appellate magistrates to be suspended. The CC’s ruling, which stemmed from doubts about the transparency of the selection process, led to a criminal lawsuit being launched against its members, backed by the legislature which has attracted widespread concern. The election process has drawn particular attention given existing fears about the direction of anti-corruption efforts following last year’s decision by former president, Jimmy Morales (2016-2020), to end the mandate of the United Nations-backed International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (Cicig) which left the country in September.
