JAMAICA: JLP looks to extend its run

The ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) appears to be on course for a second consecutive election victory when Jamaica goes to the polls on 3 September, despite the obvious difficulties facing the country as it struggles to cope with the fallout from the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. But a note of caution is in order: Jamaica’s first-past-the-post electoral system has sprung surprises in the past. In 2011, for instance, despite having only a very slim lead in the opinion polls, the People’s National Party (PNP) ended up with twice as many seats as the JLP.
